King Charles Strips Prince Andrew of Titles
King Charles has made a significant decision regarding his younger brother, Andrew. In a move that many expected, the King has taken away all of Andrew’s royal titles, including “Prince,” and has ordered him to vacate his Royal Lodge mansion, a result of Andrew’s tarnished public image.
On Thursday, Buckingham Palace announced that Andrew, who was once referred to as “Prince” and “His Royal Highness,” will now simply be known as “Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.” This change marks a clear shift in his status within the royal family.
Moreover, Andrew has received a formal notice compelling him to surrender the lease of his lavish Royal Lodge—located on the Windsor Estate west of London—and he is expected to move to a private residence in eastern England.
“His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation,” the palace explained.
Royal Lodge has been Andrew’s home since 2003, when Queen Elizabeth II permitted him to reside there. The estate boasts 30 rooms and covers 99 acres, complete with features like a swimming pool, an aviary, and several cottages.
Interestingly, reports from British newspapers have surfaced indicating that Andrew has not paid rent on this property for 20 years, despite spending around 7.5 million pounds (approximately $10.07 million) on renovations.
“These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him,” the palace stated. “Their Majesties wish to make it clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
A source close to the palace noted that while King Charles made the final decision, he had the full backing of the royal family, including Prince William, the next in line for the throne.
Earlier this month, Andrew had already given up his title of Duke of York, which is traditionally held by the second son of the reigning monarch. With no sons to inherit this title, there currently is no Duke of York. Experts suggest that upon Andrew’s passing, the title may revert to the crown, allowing King Charles to bestow it upon someone else.
Some have speculated that Prince Louis of Wales, the youngest child of Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton, could be a contender for that title in the future.
Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the younger brother of King Charles III. Presently, he holds the position of eighth in line for the throne.
His association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has drawn considerable scrutiny over the years.
