Georgia Coach Advocates for SEC Independence
Kirby Smart, the head coach of the Bulldogs, has made some bold statements regarding the SEC’s future in college athletics. He argues that if the NCAA can’t implement fair and uniform rules, the SEC should consider establishing its own guidelines.
On Tuesday, he expressed, “I’ve always believed that if we can’t agree on rules, we ought to write our own. Honestly, I’m not worried about that.” This was during the SEC spring meetings, where he emphasized the conference’s strength to thrive independently. He believes this move could lead to financial stability and better support for various sports programs.
There’s mounting frustration among SEC teams, especially following the unexpected settlement in the House v. NCAA case. Smart’s support for potential self-governing football playoffs reflects these growing concerns.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey had mentioned that this topic would be a major focus during the meetings. Smart highlighted a worry that the recent settlement doesn’t create a level recruiting field, causing ongoing legal obstacles for schools to operate effectively.
“We aim to enhance the sport and the experience for student-athletes,” Smart noted. “This doesn’t cap their income opportunities.” He clarified that he’s not against supporting what student-athletes earn; rather, he wants to foster an environment of fairness where no one is left behind.
