Mamdani Responds to Platner’s Campaign Collapse
In a recent interview, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani opted not to elaborate on whether the issues surrounding former Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner’s campaign signal deeper troubles within the progressive movement. Instead, he emphasized it’s time to “bring closure to this chapter.”
During the conversation with Errol Lewis from NY1, Lewis pointed out that Platner’s departure has ignited a national discussion about the progressive approach to candidate selection. He raised questions about whether some in the progressive camp had, perhaps, rushed to endorse a candidate who seemed “totally unfit” for the responsibilities of public office. “Is this an occupational hazard for progressives?” Lewis pondered.
Mamdani, however, redirected the focus back to Platner. “I think my focus now is how do I make sure this chapter ends and I start writing a new chapter,” he stated, expressing confidence in the voters of Maine to guide the process.
This isn’t the first time Mamdani has faced questions about Maine’s political landscape. At a press conference just before Platner suspended his campaign, he had hinted that “the time has come to withdraw from the race.”
Interestingly, Mamdani noted during the interview that all his endorsements so far have been limited to New York City, indicating he doesn’t plan to extend his influence beyond the state’s borders for this election.
Previously, he had backed far-left candidates like Claire Valdez, Brad Lander, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, all of whom achieved electoral success last month.
Mamdani had never actually endorsed Platner, but there was a connection through Morris Katz, one of his leading advisers, who had a hand in launching Platner’s campaign.
From the outset, Platner’s campaign was marred by controversy. One significant issue involved a tattoo of the Nazi symbol “Totenkopf” adornment on his chest, which Platner claimed he didn’t understand initially. However, records show he had referred to it directly.
A New York Times article published last month brought forward serious allegations regarding Platner’s interactions with past partners. The piece included statements from several women who had various experiences with him, with details from individuals like Lindsay Fifield and Jenny Racicot that painted a troubling picture.
Racicot’s allegations, particularly serious in nature, led even Platner’s staunchest supporters to distance themselves. She accused him of entering her home while intoxicated and assaulting her in 2021. Although Platner denied these claims, the fallout was already underway.
Key Democrats who had previously supported Platner, such as Senator Bernie Sanders, Ro Khanna, and Ruben Gallego, chose to back away following the publication of the allegations.
Ultimately, Platner announced the suspension of his campaign via a social media video, stating, “I can’t be myself to continue my campaign.”
