Knife-wielding sex offender apprehended outside attorney's residence in California, say police

Concerns Over Political Violence Heightened by Recent Incident

A registered sex offender was caught on surveillance video outside a California lawyer’s home in the early morning hours, stirring fears about increasing violent crime and political violence nationwide.

The targeted public official was Fresno City Attorney Andrew Jantz, whose wife and young daughter were inside the house when the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The unsettling footage revealed 56-year-old Larry Orduna Torrez approaching the residence with a knife while wearing black gloves. In the video, he seemed to ring the doorbell with the weapon in hand, then went towards the backyard, even jumping over a fence.

Seconds later, sheriff’s deputies arrived and took Torrez into custody after hearing banging at the back of the house.

The authorities reported that the suspect was arrested on charges of attempted first-degree robbery, criminal trespassing, and threatening a public servant. Records indicated that Torrez is a parolee and a registered sex offender already known to local police.

This incident has sparked discussions about California’s approach to repeat offenders and the controversial decisions surrounding the parole of violent sexual criminals. Jantz expressed concern, stating, “I have a little girl at home. It was a very traumatic event.” He added that his office had recently lost two lawsuits filed by Torrez against the city, which further fueled speculation about Torrez’s fixation on public officials.

Jantz described the recent events as an escalation, stating, “I felt like it was someone who knew who I was or had some involvement in my work.” In a separate incident the following night, someone even set fire to his backyard fence.

Torres faced court on charges of attempted robbery and trespassing, and he pleaded not guilty. The judge imposed a no-contact order with Jantz and his family.

The incident spotlights a troubling trend of rising political violence in the U.S., accentuated by various violent acts targeting public figures in recent years. Jantz remarked, “Political violence is on the rise. Someone’s going to get hurt here in Fresno.” The situation underscores the ongoing debate regarding public safety for those in government roles, as concerns resonate throughout the community.

In the wake of this frightening encounter, Jantz remains determined. He stated, “I will not let intimidation or violence stop me and my staff from doing the good work we do for the city of Fresno.”
