Matthew Stafford and Wife Face Significant Tax Debt
Matthew Stafford, the MVP of the NFL, and his wife Kelly are dealing with over $500,000 in tax debt as the football season approaches.
The couple, who play for the Los Angeles Rams and previously won the Super Bowl, have received state tax liens amounting to $534,453.67 for the 2024 tax year from the California Franchise Tax Board.
According to a lien filed on July 14, this amount attaches to properties they own or will acquire in the future. Failing to pay may lead to added interest and fees down the line.
The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk verified that the lien is currently active and has not been lifted.
Representatives for the Stafford family haven’t responded yet to inquiries about the situation.
In a future projection, if Stafford secures a one-year contract extension worth $55 million with the Rams in 2026, he’s on track to surpass $500 million in NFL earnings.
Meanwhile, the couple has been quietly developing a real estate portfolio, having purchased a mansion in Hidden Hills for $28.15 million in 2023, shortly after acquiring an adjacent property for $10.5 million. Recent reports indicate they recently sold three other homes in Hidden Hills for a combined total of $21.3 million.
The couple, together with their four daughters, have made Southern California their home since Stafford was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Rams in 2021.
Kelly and Matthew have also been together since their college days at the University of Georgia, where Stafford played for the Bulldogs from 2006 to 2008. They officially tied the knot in 2015.
During the offseason, they attended the high-profile wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, although Kelly admitted to feeling a bit “jealous” of the couple’s spotlight.
The Rams are set to kick off the 2026 season on September 10th in Melbourne, Australia, facing off against the San Francisco 49ers.
