Los Angeles Times approved Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) won the state's hotly contested Senate primary on Sunday, giving Schiff an advantage over the state's largest newspaper.
Mr. Schiff will face Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) in a three-way race expected to be the most expensive primary race in history.
The group is running for the seat currently held by Sen. LaFonza Butler (D-Calif.), who was appointed last year after the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). Mr. Butler is not pursuing an election.
The Times gave confidence to Mr. Schiff's rivals, calling the three congressmen “wise and experienced members of Congress who will adequately represent California in the Senate.”
“Mr. Schiff, however, stands out for his extraordinary leadership over the past several years, helping to protect our nation's institutions, the rule of law, and American democracy itself from former President Trump,” the magazine's editorial board wrote. ing.
Schiff's fiery leadership on the House Intelligence Committee has made him a prime target for supporters of former President Trump, the board wrote. He also led the first impeachment inquiry against Trump in 2019. Schiff was stripped of his committee seat last year and criticized by Republicans.
The Board also commended him for his work on the House of Representatives January 6, 2021 Committee.
“It is not surprising that Mr. Schiff is often selected to spearhead these high-profile initiatives,” the board wrote. “His colleagues describe him as incredibly intelligent and a uniquely skilled communicator who can get to the heart of an issue. This is an essential talent for building support.”
“Furthermore, he is seen as a team player, adept at the art of compromise, and someone who is respected by members of Congress on both sides of the aisle, despite being vilified by Trumpland.” Ta. “That's important to California.”
The Times' board noted that Mr. Schiff has received notable support from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and others.
The board also included brief words of praise for both Mr. Porter and Mr. Lee, praising Mr. Porter for his focus on business regulation and Mr. Lee for his work advocating for issues such as LGBTQ rights.
Sources say Schiff holds a narrow lead among California voters. Berkeley IGS poll released Friday. About 21% of California voters support Mr. Schiff, compared to 17% for Mr. Porter and 7% for Mr. Lee.
California has a bipartisan primary election, with both Democrats and Republicans participating in the same primary. The leading Republican candidate, former Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres player Steve Garvey, received 13% support in the poll.
The primary election is scheduled for Super Tuesday, March 5th. The top two candidates in the voting will advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation.
