Labour to Eliminate Payments for Victims of Child Sexual Abuse: Report

The Left Labour government has reportedly scrapped the UK’s compensation program for victims of child sexual abuse, citing financial austerity measures.

The national relief initiative for victims in the UK and Wales was abandoned by the Home Office, despite assurances given to victims by a former Conservative government in 2023.

As per a report from The News Outlet, the Home Office’s document titled “Child Sexual Abuse Efforts: Progress Update” indicates that budgetary constraints influenced the decision, stating it “currently does not take further steps on the IICSA proposal for a separate national financial relief scheme for all survivors of child sexual abuse.”

Reportedly, in the current fiscal climate, advancing this recommendation proves to be quite challenging.

This initiative was initially promised following an independent inquiry into child sexual abuse (IICSA) led by Alexis Jay. A comparable scheme exists for victims in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The Kier Starmer government defended its choice not to launch a national inquiry into the Muslim child rape grooming scandal, arguing that prior reports like the Jay Report were sufficient, with a focus on implementing their recommendations.

Despite thousands of young girls falling victim to child rape gangs, predominantly of Pakistani heritage, there have been reports of police and local officials overlooking these cases due to concerns of being perceived as racist. The Prime Minister claimed that demands for a formal nationwide investigation only serve to amplify “far-right” narratives.

Last week, Cabinet Minister Lucy Powell neglected the plight of numerous victims, accusing reform advocate Tim Montgomery of “dog-whistle” politics for referencing a recent documentary about grooming gangs.

Survivor Sarah Wilson, who was affected by the notorious Rochdale grooming gang, remarked that, “This is what victims and survivors have faced all these years. This is why we haven’t been heard.” She expressed frustration, noting, “They never bothered, and they never did. [They] completely dismissed my survivors and grooming experience.”

The government maintained that previous reports sufficed, yet accountability for the failures of police and officials in predominantly Labour-run cities and towns, which failed to shield young girls from sexual predators, remains sparse.

In Rotherham, a location notorious for grooming gangs where at least 1,400 girls suffered abuse, a 2022 investigation into police conduct found that no officers would be penalized. This followed the admission from local police that they had ignored grooming suspects to avoid exacerbating “racial tensions,” considering the victims were largely white girls and the offenders were of Pakistani descent.

One unnamed police chief from Rotherham stated, “Because he is Asian, he cannot afford to come out because Rotherham erupts.”
