Lane Kiffin Reacts to Ole Miss’ Heartbreaking Fiesta Bowl Loss

Lane Kiffin watched from a distance as his former Ole Miss team faced a tough defeat against Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday. Now coaching at LSU, Kiffin referred to the year as “the best season in Ole Miss history.”

He opened his post with praise for the effort his players put in, even sharing a crying emoji and a GIF to express his heartbreak. “Great effort and guts… I love you all,” he wrote.

About 11 minutes later, he reacted again on a clip showcasing the Rebels’ last-ditch Hail Mary attempt. In the clip, it seemed defensive back Ethan O’Connor had impeded wideout DeZone Stribling in the end zone. Kiffin insisted this should have led to a pass interference call against Miami.

In a dramatic turn of events, Ole Miss initially took a 27-24 lead with just over three minutes left thanks to a touchdown pass from Trinidad Chambliss. However, Hurricanes QB Carson Beck quickly turned the tables, scoring a 3-yard touchdown run just 18 seconds before the game ended.

This loss capped off a tumultuous spell for Ole Miss that began when Kiffin opted for a seven-year, $91 million contract with LSU, all while the team boasted an impressive 11-1 record and was on the verge of entering the College Football Playoff.

The Rebels managed to secure the No. 6 seed and fought hard through the playoffs, beating Tulane in the first round and pulling off an upset against Georgia in the quarterfinals. They were one step away from the national championship, needing only a Hail Mary victory against the winner of the Indiana versus Oregon game.

Meanwhile, Kiffin continues to work on shaping the LSU roster ahead of the next season following the opening of the transfer portal. He has been making comments on the recent Ole Miss game, highlighting topics like the $500,000 reward he received from the Rebels’ win over Georgia, and questions surrounding whether his staff will coach during the College Football Playoff game.

Interestingly, Kiffin expressed a desire to coach Ole Miss in the postseason despite his departure. That request, however, was turned down by the school.

“All I remember is how they hugged each other,” remarked Ole Miss’ new coach, Pete Golding. “A lot has happened in the last month. They’re going to be talking about this for a long time.”
