Alligator Attack Claims Life of 71-Year-Old Man in Florida
A nearly 12-foot-long alligator tragically took the life of a 71-year-old man while he was peacefully fishing along the lakeshore in Winter Garden, Florida, near Orlando, on Friday afternoon.
This incident marks the second fatal alligator attack in Florida this year, as reported by various authorities.
According to the Winter Garden Police Department, Steven Hamilton was fishing by Lake Apopka when the alligator struck around 5 p.m. This lake is located approximately 20 miles from Orlando.
Despite the best efforts of emergency crews to save him, their attempts were hindered by other alligators present in the water, as stated by Winter Garden Fire Chief Jose Gainza.
Hamilton’s body was ultimately recovered around 7 p.m., with officials confirming the alligator measured 11.8 feet.
In a statement, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission expressed heartfelt condolences to Hamilton’s family and loved ones during this difficult period.
Winter Garden Police Chief Michael Mason indicated that the large alligator had been captured and euthanized to prevent any future attacks.
Mason also noted that Lake Apopka is home to numerous alligators, and there was no prior awareness of any such threat along the shoreline before the attack occurred.
He emphasized, “Always be aware of your surroundings. Always be safe. Wildlife: Respect it. Keep your distance. It may seem harmless, but it can be dangerous.”
Although American alligators are prevalent throughout Florida, they are not commonly associated with attacks, according to statistics compiled by authorities.
This June, a 13-foot alligator fatally injured a 31-year-old woman, Brittany Clark, while she was swimming in the Econlockhatchee River near her Oviedo home in central Florida.
In another incident last year, a large alligator attacked and killed 61-year-old Cynthia Diekema after it capsized her canoe on Lake Kissimmee, roughly 70 miles south of Orlando. Reports indicated that her husband tried to rescue her as the alligator had her partially in its jaws.
With the recent incident involving Hamilton, a total of 34 alligator-related fatalities have been recorded in Florida according to state data.
