Fourth of July at the Great American State Fair
This Fourth of July saw the Great American State Fair bustling with energy, as people came together to celebrate the holiday while also reflecting on personal stories.
As festivities continued, many shared what it meant to spend Independence Day with their loved ones.
Tom Rutledge, a grandfather from Texas, expressed an emotional connection when he reflected on the sacrifices made for the country. “When you think about our country and the people who died and the people who gave up what they did, you get emotional in a way,” he mentioned.
He had brought along his 13-year-old grandson to give him a taste of the holiday. “I wish he could have experienced this at 13,” he said. “There’s probably a gap in our younger generation. Education… hasn’t quite communicated enough about what this country is about and how much people love this country.”
Despite worries about the conditions—like storm warnings and summer heat—young attendees showed a lot of enthusiasm. Many children gleefully anticipated the fireworks, with one girl eagerly telling her father, “I’m looking forward to the fireworks!” Another child was heard cheering for planes flying by.
For the adults present, the fair served as a poignant reminder of national unity. A father who came from Florida remarked that the best part of the day was simply being surrounded by fellow patriots, including both young people and military members.
Rutledge mentioned, “I’m just looking forward to spending time with all the American people who make this country great.”
This strong sense of community was evident throughout the fairgrounds. The crowded atmosphere somehow seemed to bring out a kindness among attendees rather than frustration. A couple commented, “It’s very crowded, isn’t it? People are amazingly kind,” noting how they had just made new friends while waiting in line for a ride.
They pointed to another couple—who had come from Tennessee and New Jersey—highlighting how shared patriotism and the festive spirit linked them despite their different origins. It’s moments like these that remind us of the joy found in togetherness, especially on such a significant day.
