Larry Provost: President Trump Erases Calhoun’s Legacy of Rebellion and Rejection

When the law is disregarded, there can be no forgiveness, especially from those who place such importance on order. This has been the sentiment expressed by the left since January 6, 2021, after they largely remained silent during the riots that followed the Black Lives Matter movement. Yet, the recent riots demonstrate their true nature once again. These actions, often cloaked in claims of racism, classism, and control, reflect a long-standing ideology that thrives on power dynamics and domination. Riots pose a far greater danger than the spirit of rights they purportedly advocate.

What they label as “almost peaceful” protests is, frankly, absurd. Attacking government buildings in opposition to federal immigration enforcement—this suggests they want to cultivate a base that depends on government support, perhaps even for future votes. They then redirect their vitriol towards what they term privileged groups and even their own businesses.

The left seems unable to restrain itself. Their disregard for law and order suggests they can’t genuinely demand it, often appearing to play into Trump’s narrative. Yet, they don’t seem particularly consistent in this regard. Rebels attack businesses regardless of their race. They profess to advocate for animal rights but then assault police horses. They claim to fight for all, but their actions often serve the interests of elites or illegal immigrants, seemingly for voting purposes or to foster a reliance on socialist policies.

This philosophy is deeply rooted. Marxism, with its links to slavery, predates even the academic embrace of socialism in Europe. Take Andrew Jackson, for instance—one of Trump’s heroes. Jackson openly critiqued his own Vice President, John C. Calhoun, who endorsed extreme measures against opposing views. This ideological battle stretched until Lincoln inherited it, dealing with the culmination of these tensions in the Civil War. Jackson may have owned slaves, but he upheld a Christian notion of law and order over his self-interest.

For decades, this struggle continued through the Civil Rights era and into the practices we see today concerning issues like abortion and immigration. Their culture of death, as it could be called, has become too blatant to mask, even when they point to a “third way,” like Bill Clinton’s balanced approach on abortion. This tension has merely intensified with Trump’s looming presence, seen by some as an existential threat to the status quo.

Abolitionists viewed Lincoln as a unifier, yet some leftists disregarded the plight of enslaved African Americans due to economic ideals that labeled him an extremist. This rebellion against him only led to their own realization of failure. Their animosity for Trump seems to echo this same toxic heritage.

Today, remnants of extremism, fueled by various organizations and educational institutions, are becoming increasingly apparent, reminiscent of the uprisings seen in the 1860s and 1960s. The populist elements within conservatism still resonate, as supporters and opponents alike realize the importance of adhering to law and order. This is why those issues have been pivotal in elections, particularly in 2016 and anticipated in 2024.

We must remain vigilant against the left, aware of the warnings that history has provided. Their occasional references to Reagan often serve only to fracture American consensus, rather than uniting in opposition to an elitist agenda.

America embodies the principles of freedom and law, standing starkly against European-inspired socialism. The sooner we leave destructive ideologies behind, the safer America will be. Yet the left tends to act as if it were a nearly religious movement, often leading to harm for innocent individuals while criticizing attempts to restore order. They seem devoid of compelling moral or logical arguments.

The choice ahead is clear: we must confront this legacy of chaos with determination. Let’s end the era defined by historical riots and the notion of nullification.
