Trump Administration Files Lawsuit Against California’s Redistricting Plan

A recent proposal that empowers California’s Democratic-controlled Legislature to modify congressional districts has sparked considerable debate. The Trump administration has stepped in, filing a lawsuit aiming to halt this gerrymandering initiative, which they argue could help Democrats flip five Republican seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

On Thursday, the Department of Justice joined a lawsuit against Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration, contesting the legality of the law associated with this proposal.

“Using race as a means to forward political agendas is inappropriate, and that’s precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50,” stated Assistant Attorney General Jesus Osete. He further claimed that California residents were presented with illegally drawn maps containing racial slurs and noted that the U.S. Constitution prohibits such actions post-2026.

Governor Newsom celebrated the legislation’s approval as a significant win for Democrats, framing it as a chance for Californians to push back against Donald Trump’s administration. Indeed, the measure passed with 64.6% of votes in favor, suggesting a strong backing from the electorate.

“Proposition 50 symbolizes our collective stand against bullying and degradation—concerns not just for individuals, but for our communities and nation at large,” Newsom explained.

Amidst the legal turmoil, President Trump accused Democrats of committing fraud during the voting process. He took to social media to express his beliefs that the redistricting vote was fundamentally flawed and that mail-in voting practices were unjustly restrictive for the Republican Party in California.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi weighed in, describing California’s redistricting plan as a bold power grab that undermines civil rights and mocks democracy itself. “Newsom’s efforts to consolidate one-party dominance will not succeed,” she asserted.

In response to the lawsuit, Newsom’s office dismissed the allegations, suggesting that those opposing the ballot had simply lost their case at the polls and would soon lose it in court as well.
