Leader of Green Organization Says She Cares More About Wildlife Than People at Alligator Alcatraz

Concerns Over Impact of “Alligator Alcatraz” on Florida Wildlife

The director of the Florida Center for Biodiversity expressed concerns on Tuesday about the effects of the “Alligator Alcatraz” facility on the state’s wildlife. This concern extends to issues related to illegal immigration and the role of immigration officials.

Environmental advocates initiated a lawsuit aiming to block the opening of detention centers that are set to be used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This comes just before a visit to the facility located at an abandoned airport in the Everglades. During an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Elaine Bennett was questioned about the safety of detainees at the site.

“I think storms pose a genuine threat, but my main focus is on the wildlife rather than the people being held there,” Bennett stated. She recounted walking near the site and not encountering any crocodile issues. “There are concerns that it undermines a significant message; it simply shouldn’t be there. The residents of Florida don’t want this, and it poses an immense risk to our ecological resources,” she added.

On June 24, the Trump administration approved the construction of a facility intended for housing and deporting illegal immigrants, a proposal put forth by Florida Republican Attorney General James Usmieire.

During a tour of the facility, Trump was accompanied by Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The administration has taken various steps to address illegal immigration, including designating groups like Mexican drug cartels and certain gangs as foreign terrorist organizations. This designation aims to expedite the deportation process for gang members, a move enacted under the Alien Enemies Act, a law from 1798.
