Leading Armed Services Democrat: Hegseth Fails the Test for Pentagon Leadership!

Top Armed Services Democrat: Hegseth ‘not up to the task of managing the Pentagon’

Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) stated on Wednesday that he does not believe Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth would effectively “get to work” managing the Pentagon.

Smith, a leading Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, expressed his worries in a recent interview after a report emerged indicating that Hegseth had previously disclosed sensitive information regarding his strategy to confront the Houthi Rebels in a private signal group chat.

Hegseth had faced earlier scrutiny for sharing comparable details in a signal chat that involved Atlantic editors.

“My reaction to the confusion has made it clear that Secretary Hegseth lacks experience in leading the department,” Smith told MSNBC.

“It seems evident that he hasn’t effectively dealt with the complexities of managing the Pentagon, which endangers national security and jeopardizes us all,” he added.

Smith particularly criticized Hegseth’s response to the recent report. In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Hegseth claimed that disgruntled media employees were targeting him, asserting that there was nothing to classify as a group chat.

“He continues to utilize the signal after everything gets exposed, but his unresponsiveness to the arising issues only exacerbates the situation,” Smith stated.

“While individuals can make errors regarding sharing classified information, for the Secretary of Defense to claim this was not a classification is serious. As stated before, when we all examine exactly what is outlined in that chat, the attack plan, including time, location, methods—all of that is clearly incorrect.”

Smith mentioned he does not anticipate President Trump to dismiss Hegseth despite the ongoing controversy, as the president values personal loyalty more than effective management.

“This reflects how Trump aims to govern. He desires to lead with an authoritarian approach, based on personal loyalty to himself. And Pete Hegseth has been completely loyal to Donald Trump,” Smith remarked.

“This is a situation tied to the Trump administration,” he continued. “It raises the issue of adopting an authoritarian style of governance. Rather than adhering to constitutional principles and legal frameworks, it centers around Trump. It’s not about serving the American people. It’s not about managing our government effectively.”

“So, no, I’m not anticipating Trump will relieve Pete Hegseth of his duties. Pete Hegseth performs exceptionally for Donald Trump, putting American national security in jeopardy.
