Leading Democratic senator faces criticism for changing stance on Venezuela after Trump's actions against Maduro

Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s Evolving Stance on Venezuela

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) has faced criticism due to her shifting viewpoint regarding Venezuela and its former president, Nicolás Maduro. This comes after she previously supported military action to remove Maduro and questioned the legitimacy of the Venezuelan government back in 2019. Recently, she accused the Trump administration of attempting to “run” other nations.

During her 2019 presidential campaign, Klobuchar backed the use of military force to oust Maduro and promote democracy in Venezuela. She stated, “I’m also happy that we’re trying to get Mr. Maduro out. But the answer here is to make sure we work with our allies and push for democracy and some kind of negotiated agreement. The military should always be an option.” Later that year, she reiterated her support for U.S. involvement in establishing democracy in Venezuela, expressing, “Of course I support the emergence of a new president and the delegitimization of the Maduro regime. You always leave things on the table.” It seems her consistent advocacy is now under scrutiny.

In response to her comments, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) remarked, “Democrats like Klobuchar and Schumer have spent years demanding the removal of dictator Nicolás Maduro. Now that President Trump has actually done it, they are suddenly opposing the results.” He went on to suggest that they may be suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

John Ashbrook, host of the “Ruthless” podcast, commented on the situation, criticizing what he perceives as the failure of Washington politics. He noted the disconnect between politicians’ remarks to the media and their support for military personnel. Longtime Republican strategist Colin Reed also weighed in, expressing disappointment that Klobuchar fails to acknowledge the positive developments following Maduro’s removal, emphasizing how Venezuela’s socialist regime has severely impacted its citizens and international relations.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer received criticism from the White House for labeling Trump’s actions regarding Maduro as “reckless.” Schumer had previously criticized Trump for not removing a “stronger” Maduro. Additionally, Senator Dick Durbin shifted from pledging support for the Venezuelan populace to raising concerns about Trump’s military strategy. Chris Van Hollen, another senator, transitioned from advocating for pressure on Maduro to denouncing any attempt to replace him as an “unlawful act of war.”

In light of these developments, Fox News Digital reached out to Klobuchar for her perspective but did not receive a response before publication.
