ICE Officers Begin Patrolling U.S. Airports

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were deployed to airports in major cities like New York, Atlanta, and Houston on Monday. President Trump remarked that the officers were “here to help.”

In a related issue, key lawmakers overseeing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are hopeful that Trump’s new initiative to tackle the ongoing partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will alleviate the long delays experienced at airports nationwide.

Rep. Carlos Jimenez (R-Fla.), who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee’s transportation subcommittee, expressed optimism, stating, “This will help and it will speed up the process significantly.” He pointed out the growing frustration among TSA employees, some of whom are feeling overwhelmed and are reconsidering their roles within the agency.

On Sunday, President Trump announced he would send ICE agents to assist TSA operations, as the DHS shutdown drags into its 37th day.

“ICE will be heading to the airport on Monday to support our amazing TSA agents who continue to do their jobs despite the fact that radical left-wing Democrats are jeopardizing our safety by withholding necessary funds,” Trump shared on Truth Social.

In a follow-up post, he encouraged ICE agents at the airports to remove their face coverings, an issue that has been contentious during the funding negotiations. Democrats want immigration operations performed without masks, while many Republicans argue they’re essential for safety.

Jimenez emphasized the importance of customer satisfaction in airport operations, likening it to private-sector practices. As TSA staffing decreases, he warned that long wait times are becoming increasingly untenable for travelers.

Amidst this turmoil, tens of thousands of TSA employees are working unpaid as the shutdown continues, leading to extended delays at major hubs like Houston and New Jersey. Many employees report feeling unwell, exacerbated by the stress of financial insecurity.

Democratic leaders have raised concerns about Trump’s strategy, particularly regarding ICE’s controversial history. For instance, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) has labeled this approach “morally, legally, and politically unacceptable.”

However, Jimenez noted that changes in leadership at DHS are forthcoming, suggesting a shift in focus for ICE towards collaborating more effectively with TSA officers. “If you fund DHS,” he stated, “you won’t have to worry about having ICE agents in TSA facilities,” addressing concerns from his Democratic colleagues.

The current government shutdown was prompted by Democrats withdrawing from a bipartisan funding agreement for DHS, protesting against Trump’s stringent immigration policies. Efforts to negotiate a new deal have stalled, primarily due to disagreements over immigration enforcement funding.

Unlike the previous government shutdown, this one specifically impacts DHS, influencing various agencies including ICE, TSA, and FEMA, but doesn’t affect the entirety of government operations.
