"Leave us alone" and "Get ICE out of Minnesota": Democrats respond strongly after Bondi requests voter information

Response to Minnesota’s Welfare Programs and Immigration Policies

Attorney General Pam Bondi has urged leaders in Minnesota to provide comprehensive records on the state’s welfare programs funded by the federal government. Additionally, she is calling for an end to sanctuary policies and better access to voter registration information. The Minnesota Democratic Party and Farmers and Labor Party have responded quite firmly against these requests.

In a letter addressed to Governor Tim Walz, Bondi elaborated on how local authorities are hindering the Trump administration’s attempts to enforce immigration laws. She highlighted a concerning 1,300% rise in violent incidents against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, which includes a staggering 3,200% increase in attacks involving vehicles.

“Donald Trump and Pam Bondi are insisting on obtaining access to Minnesotans’ voter registration lists as a condition for alleviating federal pressure,” a statement from the DFL Party claimed.

Bondi’s assertions included allegations of widespread illegal activities, which she claims associate with significant financial fraud happening under Walz’s governance. “This surge in fraud also poses risks to election integrity,” she remarked. She made three specific demands of Walz.

First, she requested that the governor supply all federal authorities with records pertaining to Medicaid and Food and Nutrition Services, which would facilitate an investigation. Second, she urged Walz to abolish Minnesota’s existing shelter policy, which she alleges exacerbates crime by preventing local jails from aiding ICE. “We encourage you to collaborate with ICE to transfer undocumented immigrants from Minnesota detention facilities to avoid these incidents spilling into the community,” Bondi stressed.

Lastly, she called for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division to be granted access to the state’s voter rolls to ensure adherence to federal regulations.

Bondi concluded her letter with a strong message. “Do not impede federal immigration enforcement, and do not allow disorder to dominate our streets and places of worship. We will persist in our efforts to protect Americans and restore safety in Minnesota, despite any local opposition,” she stated.

In response, the DFL Party accused Bondi and Trump of attempting to “intimidate” the state. Party Chairman Richard Carlbom firmly asserted, “Let’s clarify: this must stop.”

Furthermore, the DFL shared a statement from Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin, condemning Bondi’s letter, which he described as a threat following a violent incident involving federal immigration agents in Minnesota. Martin expressed that the DNC would stand with local officials and fight vigorously in courts if necessary. He also conveyed a message of opposition to Trump’s administration regarding ICE’s presence in Minnesota.
