LeBron James to Test Free Agency After Eight Seasons with Lakers

LeBron James is gearing up for what many are calling Chapter 4 of his basketball career. At nearly 42, he has decided to explore free agency for the third time, announcing that he will be leaving the Los Angeles Lakers after an eight-season tenure.

According to reports, James informed the Lakers of his decision recently, aiming for a remarkable 24th season in the NBA.

In response, the Lakers issued a statement expressing gratitude for James’s time with the team. It seems, however, that their relationship remains tumultuous, with no signs of an amicable resolution.

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss praised James, referring to him as one of the greatest athletes ever. She highlighted his contributions, including leading the team to a championship in 2020 amidst challenging circumstances, and recognized the numerous records he set while donning the team colors. “We wish him the best in his future endeavors,” she added, noting that he will always hold a cherished place in the Lakers family.

James shared this statement on his own platforms, adding his sentiments. “No, thank you! It’s truly an honor to wear (the purple and gold) as we continue the greatness and legacy of all this time!” he remarked. “I hope I made some people proud during my tenure.”

Throughout his time with the Lakers, James won his fourth NBA championship, extended his All-Star streak to an impressive 22 years, and even became the league’s all-time leading scorer. He just keeps breaking records.

While the Lakers were reportedly keen to have him return, James appears ready to move on. Interestingly, there’s also the possibility of teaming up with his son, Bronny, in the future—a unique milestone being the first father-son duo to play together in the NBA.

As a side note, Bronny’s salary has just become fully guaranteed, adding to the interesting dynamics at play.

James made his way to the Lakers in 2018 after a second stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he brought a long-awaited championship to the city of Ohio.

In the latest season, James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds, stepping up to help the Lakers during critical moments when other key players were sidelined due to injuries.

Now, the Golden State Warriors are emerging as the favorites to sign James, which could spark a riveting new chapter in the long-standing rivalry with Stephen Curry, potentially creating one of the most exciting duos in sports history.
