LeBron James’ Recent Decision and Draymond Green’s Insights

Draymond Green, a star with the Warriors, counts himself among James’ close friends.

Green believes that the ongoing discussions about James were a significant factor that kept Golden State from signing the 41-year-old this summer.

“Ultimately, I don’t think Bron could get past the history,” he commented. “I totally understand that. This was a hurdle we all kinda knew had to be cleared.”

“We live in times where even people with nothing substantial to say have their opinions,” Green mentioned on his podcast.

He further elaborated, suggesting that if James had decided to join the Warriors, the backlash would have been overwhelming. “People would say things like, ‘Oh, you teamed up with Steph’… That would have been tough for him, I think. And I believe that pressure was a major reason behind his decision, which ultimately affected the Warriors’ chances of landing LeBron.”

Rich Paul, James’ agent, mentioned that turning down the Warriors was a difficult choice for the all-time leading scorer in the NBA.

The leading contenders in the free agent market appeared to be the 76ers and Golden State, which was surprising. Many thought the Miami Heat or Cleveland Cavaliers would be top contenders, especially since James had secured three of his four NBA championships with those teams.

However, Green speculated that James signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia after weighing the public scrutiny he would face for joining the Warriors, a team that stood as one of his fiercest rivals.

From 2015 to 2018, the Cavaliers and Warriors faced off in the NBA Finals four times in a row. Notably, James guided Cleveland to its first-ever championship in 2016, a title that came in dramatic fashion after overcoming a 3-1 series deficit.

In that decisive Game 7, the Cavaliers emerged victorious, claiming the series 4-3. During that period, the rivalry between James and Stephen Curry was front and center in the basketball world.

Green’s comments suggest that this intense rivalry may have played a role in James choosing to explore free agency. Fans remember the excellent teamwork displayed by James and Curry during the 2024 Paris Olympics; one can’t help but wonder how captivating it would have been to see that collaboration in the NBA. Still, even with James, it’s unclear if the Warriors would have been title contenders.
