Mixed Reactions from LGBTQ Celebrities on the American Flag in “Reclaim the Flag” Trailer
The trailer for the documentary “Reclaim the Flag” has sparked a variety of responses from LGBTQ celebrities. Released on Tuesday, it features a voiceover that raises questions about the symbolism of the American flag.
“It really depends on how you feel about the flag,” noted actress and writer Lena Waithe. Some voices in the trailer took a more critical stance, suggesting that the flag evokes feelings of “trauma” and is “not welcome here.”
A university professor expressed that the American flag can be a source of anxiety and fear, stating: “Patriotism quickly slips into nationalism.”
Content creator Matt Bernstein humorously remarked, “If I see an American flag emoji on someone’s Grindr profile, I think they’re probably a Republican.”
The trailer’s description indicated that the American flag has come to symbolize fear among citizens navigating “uncertain fluidity.” The documentary, a 30-minute piece, aims to explore how the LGBTQ community can reclaim the flag.
Despite some anxieties about the flag being used against their communities, there are optimistic viewpoints as well. Mel Otteberg, the editor-in-chief of Interview Magazine, mentioned, “The American flag isn’t just their flag. We should be proud of the American flag. We are Americans.”
The documentary will feature around 50 LGBTQ individuals, including content creators, writers, and politicians like former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. It is set to debut on the documentary’s YouTube channel on July 17th.
Designer Alexis Bitter, who contributed to the film, emphasized its significance in helping LGBTQ people redefine their relationship with the flag. “In the past decade, the American flag has become a symbol of division. I wanted to create a documentary about reclaiming it for all Americans,” Bitter expressed. “Speaking with historically marginalized groups has provided a powerful lens to inform the way forward.”
