Florida LGBTQ+ Group Postpones Pride Events Amid Political Climate

A Florida LGBTQ+ activist group has expressed concerns about dwindling donations which have contributed to the cancellation of multiple pride events, including the Tampa Pride Festival.

Carrie West, president of the Tampa Pride Board, criticized Republican Governor Ron DeSantis for enacting laws perceived as detrimental to the LGBTQ+ community.

“Anti-LGBTQ+ policies and laws in Florida and nationwide aim to alienate and dehumanize segments of the population, a worrying step toward authoritarianism.”

West elaborated on the economic challenges faced by the organization, noting a decrease in corporate sponsorships and the elimination of programs supportive of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. These factors are making it increasingly difficult to sustain future operations, especially looking ahead to 2026.

As a result, the organization has decided to take a year off to focus on fundraising, with hopes of returning in 2027. West acknowledged the crucial financial role that these events play for local businesses and the LGBTQIA+ community but emphasized the necessity of this pause for reassessment and strategy development.

Meanwhile, St. Pete’s Pride organizer mentioned to WFTS-TV that his group has experienced a loss of approximately $150,000 in funding over recent years.

“It’s been a gradual decline. This past year, we’ve had to scale back significantly for the 2025 season due to decreased engagement from our partners,” he added.

Wendy from the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism condemned the actions of right-wing figures, stating, “The cancellation of the Tampa Pride Event underscores a coordinated campaign by conservative leaders to stifle public support and financial backing for events that celebrate diversity and inclusion.”

Green-Calisch mentioned that the group is ramping up fundraising efforts due to a notable dip in donations, urging partners to intensify their support during this critical period.
