Reactions to Trump’s State of the Union Address

Liberal commentators, including those from MS NOW and CNN, have likened President Donald Trump’s recent State of the Union Address to a game show. Jen Psaki described the president’s style as somewhat “circus entertainer”-like, particularly noting his decision to award medals to various Americans.

One MS NOW host, a former press secretary for Biden, remarked, “President Trump really doubled down on something quite unpopular. It felt like a three-part speech. There was a section that was, well, shockingly violent. Then there was another, almost like a circus act, where he showcased unrelated people and events. Finally, there was a bit focused on policy.” It’s an interesting take, to say the least.

Trump’s State of the Union was the longest in U.S. history. He highlighted what he called a “turnaround” in the economy, although some moments appeared to overshadow his economic focus.

Phillip, another CNN commentator, analyzed the speech’s style, suggesting it revealed a disconnect between the president’s vision and how the country sees itself. She acknowledged that the president’s attempt to create a moment of unity might not have resonated as strongly as intended.

Moreover, she commented on Trump’s method of praising Americans, saying, “I thought it was really skillfully done.” He awarded various medals, including the Purple Heart to National Guard Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolf and to the family of Army specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who tragically lost her life alongside him in Washington, D.C. Trump also recognized military heroism by awarding the highest military honors to Chief Warrant Officer Eric Slover and Capt. E. Royce Williams.

Claire McCaskill, a former Democratic senator analyzing the speech, noted its game show-like qualities, especially given the absence of many Democrats, which allowed ambassadors to occupy seats usually filled by Congress members. “I realized it felt like a game show at times,” she said, pointing out how Trump interacted with the crowd.

MS NOW host Rachel Maddow emphasized a similar sentiment, stating it resembled an “award ceremony.” Meanwhile, Simone Sanders Townsend claimed, “It felt like watching a game show where accolades were handed out left and right.” She humorously referenced Oprah Winfrey, saying, “Let’s get a medal! Let’s get a medal!”

Townsend acknowledged Trump’s marketing prowess, admitting that while she disagrees with him on many issues, his ability to create viral moments, particularly when honoring servicemen and women, is noteworthy.

The media’s reaction, too, has echoed this game show analogy. Various headlines from major newspapers compared the evening’s events to a variety show, highlighting the theatrical elements present during the address.
