Liberal Media Blames MAGA for America’s Heavy Protein Diets

There seems to be a fixation on protein consumption in the American narrative, particularly highlighted by Vanity Fair.

Interestingly, these mainstream outlets shy away from discussing the health advantages associated with a protein-rich diet. They also tend to overlook that health and muscle development primarily exist outside the realm of politics. It seems like they miss significant trends targeting both their publication and elements of the right-wing “Manosphere.”

In a piece published on May 1, Vanity Fair associated protein intake with what they describe as the “male rights movement,” stating that this phenomenon is “undoubtedly gendered.”

Kezia Weir notes, “While there is a strong interest in protein, historical trends suggest a clear link between the male rights movement and the growing public appetite for protein.” She elaborates, suggesting that this fixation on protein relates to societal standards of body image and diet heavily encoded for women, while it offers men a platform to bond over shared interests.

The article even mentions research claiming that protein and muscle-building supplements might lead young men toward anabolic steroids, a notion some would argue is quite absurd.

It’s all rather ridiculous. Protein is essential—it plays a crucial role in muscle repair and growth. Women who consistently incorporate it into their diets for health reasons are certainly not part of any right-wing agenda. Furthermore, men aren’t embodying “toxic masculinity” simply by opting to eat meat more often than women. Both genders that aim for fitness, a lean physique, or muscularity often do so in defiance of prevailing liberal ideologies about health and fitness. Their motivation lies in pursuing personal happiness.

This Vanity Fair piece stands as yet another example of how liberal media seeks to frame fitness and health as belonging to a right-wing ideology. The New York Times once emphasized a similar angle, suggesting a crossover of fitness with political leanings in their profile of left-wing streamer Hasan Piker lifting weights alongside right-leaning themes.

Michael Jordan once famously remarked, “Republicans buy sneakers too.” Well, it seems Democrats also partake in protein consumption, and it’s not exactly an indicator of political leanings—supporters of both ideologies enjoy food beyond the rigid labels.
