Democratic voters in Pennsylvania claimed that “no one got a raise” after CBS journalist Scott Perry questioned his vote for President-elect Donald Trump.
After Trump's decisive victory and the Republicans' significant post-election gains, “60 Minutes” traveled to battleground states to remind ordinary Americans how Democrats were “misleading the people.” .
One of the voters, diner owner Roz Werkheiser, explained that rising food costs are one of the big issues.
“Obviously prices have gone up. [of] Food expenses. And if you have a family of four or five people, have them say, “Oh my god, I spent $100 on breakfast tips.” That's strange. 'It is what it is,' Werkhiser told CBS journalist Scott Pelley.
She added, “My mom always said, 'You have to vote Democratic.'” You know, those are for the poor. ”
“Did you grow up in a Democratic household?” Perry asked.
“Yes,” Werkheiser answered.
“But you just voted for Donald Trump,” Perry said.
Werkheiser again answered, “Yes.”
Although the economy was considered one of the top issues for voters before the election, Mr. Perry insisted to Mr. Werkhiser that the economy had actually improved.
“Inflation is down by more than half, interest rates are down, mortgage rates are down, wages are up. Don't you feel that?” Perry asked.
“It doesn't feel like that,” Werkhiser said. “No, I don't feel it. I don't feel it at all. All the people I talked to, not a single one got a raise. But we've been doing this for four years. I mean, four years. Gas was super high. Yes, it's only gone down now, but it's been up for the last four to three and a half years.”
Inflation has fallen from near-record levels in 2022, but prices have not fallen to pre-pandemic levels.
