Lindsey Graham Passes Away at 71: Tributes Emerge
Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina has sadly died at the age of 71 following a sudden illness. Early reports from the medical examiner in Washington, D.C., suggest that the cause of death was a ruptured aorta linked to cardiovascular disease. Graham, known for his strong stance on foreign policy, had recently returned from a trip to Ukraine.
Having served in Congress for over three decades, his financial status was fairly modest compared to many peers in Washington. Estimates indicate his net worth at around $1.4 million, although disclosure records filed in May show figures ranging from just over $600,000 to about $2.2 million. This places him as the 294th wealthiest out of 535 voting members, based on data from Quiver Quantitative.
At 71, his financial standing was quite typical for his age group. According to Fidelity, individuals between 65 and 74 have an average net worth of $1.79 million, with a median of $409,900.
The South Carolina senator, who emerged from humble beginnings to become a significant figure within the Republican Party, passed away unexpectedly.
While Graham’s assets were mainly in mutual funds and government bonds—protecting him from the scrutiny that comes with lawmakers’ stock trading—his annual salary as a senator was $174,000. Though his wealth may have seemed limited by Washington’s standards, it was still a notable contrast from where he started.
As he grew up, Graham lived in a small room attached to his family’s restaurant in Central, South Carolina, later moving into a mobile home. In a reflection of his modest beginnings, a law school roommate once said he probably had a childhood much like “South Carolina’s equivalent of a mobile home.”
After the sudden passing of his parents shortly after he moved away for college, Graham became the guardian of his younger sister at just 22 years old. An Air Force veteran, he was also the first member of his family to attend college.
According to Graham’s office, he passed away on a Saturday after a brief illness, just after his return from Ukraine. The coroner’s office confirmed that the preliminary cause of death was indeed a ruptured aorta due to chronic heart disease.
Just before his passing, it’s reported that Graham even joked, “I can’t die now. We need to implement sanctions on Russia, sort out Iran, and normalize diplomatic relations with Israel and Saudi Arabia,” according to a source close to him.
As of now, Graham’s staff has not provided comments on this tragic news.
