Live updates: Supreme Court rules Trump has presumptive criminal immunity for official acts

The Supreme Court handed a historic ruling on Monday, handing former President Trump a victory, ruling that former presidents enjoy a presumption of criminal immunity for their official actions while in the White House.

The move could delay the federal election overturning case in Washington, D.C., by sending the case back to a lower court to decide whether Trump’s actions on January 6th merit protection from criminal prosecution for decisions he made while in the White House.

Trump’s appeal put a freeze on a federal indictment charging him with conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election, preventing it from moving forward to a trial.

The Supreme Court’s decision, which comes four months before Election Day, when Trump hopes to retake the White House, gives him the power to halt his own prosecution and potentially fire special counsel Jack Smith.
