The former wife of Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth has returned her royal honor as a way to protest what she considers President Trump’s “shallow” behavior during his state visit.
Rivia Giuggioli, who received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) award in 2019 for her work in fashion, shared her decision on social media, stating she felt compelled to return the medal to the British government.
The 56-year-old activist explained her reasoning, noting that Trump’s rhetoric during the UN General Assembly had influenced her decision.
In her Instagram post, she expressed her disappointment regarding the UK’s reception of Trump, worrying that the visit could undermine respect and harmony.
Though she initially accepted the award on behalf of “garment worker activists,” her respect diminished significantly after Trump was welcomed by the British monarch.
Giuggioli criticized King Charles for an “alarming” display, suggesting it would further harm vulnerable populations and the environment.
She expressed her confusion over the conflicting positions, stating, “I can’t reconcile these two stances, so I’m shredding my honor and sending it back.” She emphasized that making her feelings known required taking a stand.
Alongside her symbolic act, Giuggioli mentioned that she had written a letter to accompany her returned MBE, signing it with “Libya Ghagiori (Firth).”
The MBE is one of the most esteemed honors in Britain, established by King George V in 1917, recognizing significant contributions within communities.
During Trump’s two-day state visit to the UK, he was immersed in traditional royal customs, including ceremonial events and state banquets.
Giuggioli first met Firth while working as a production assistant for the BBC on “Nostromo.” The two married the following year and share two children, Luka and Matteo.
However, their marriage faced challenges after Giuggioli was revealed to have had a relationship with Italian journalist Marco Blancaccia during a brief separation. Although she made allegations against him, claims emerged from Blancaccia that he became a harasser, which led to a private settlement regarding their past interactions.
