Pop star Lizzo has been excused from jury duty in Los Angeles after voicing her anti-ICE sentiments during the trial of a man accused of assaulting a federal immigration officer, according to reports.
The R&B artist, who shared a post on Instagram about her outfit while at federal court, admitted to prosecutors that she felt she couldn’t fairly judge a case involving a man accused of attacking an ICE officer. A representative from the U.S. Attorney’s Office provided this information.
Lizzo was summoned in relation to the case of Luis Dallet Hipolito, charged with felony assault resulting in bodily injury to a federal officer.
Prosecutors claimed Hipolito punched an ICE officer during an immigration raid in Los Angeles last June, leading to broken glasses and facial cuts. Interestingly, he was acquitted recently.
On Instagram, Lizzo flaunted her “jury duty look” to her large following, posting pictures from what seemed to be a courthouse bathroom and posing outside the courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.
She detailed her outfit: “OK, the jacket is Saint Laurent, the top is Itti, the pants are Custom Samimiro, the necklace is Chanel, and the shoes are Louis Vuitton.”
The singer, whose birth name is Melissa Vivian Jefferson, has been a vocal critic of ICE. In a heartfelt video posted on social media earlier this year, she touched on the immigration issues faced in Minneapolis, where she resided for about six years starting in 2011.
Lizzo lamented, fighting back tears, “My heart is broken for Minneapolis. In the years that I lived there, it seems like things like this are happening, whether it’s Philando Castile, whether it’s Jamar Clark, whether it’s George Floyd. There’s injustice happening there.” She added that she would look for ways to help further.
Representatives for Lizzo did not respond to inquiries for comments.
