Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary with a Monumental Artwork

As Americans come together to celebrate Independence Day and the nation’s 250th anniversary, a notable highlight is the immense oil painting of the American flag created by patriotic artist Scott Robaid. Displayed at the Made in America Pavilion during the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, this artwork serves as a tribute to the ideals the flag embodies.

In a recent interview, Robaid reflected on the significance of his project. He expressed that it forever captures America’s semi-quincentenary, honoring veterans and first responders whose sacrifices have safeguarded the nation’s freedoms.

“This milestone resonates deeply with me,” Robaid noted, highlighting the privilege of commemorating America’s 250 years of independence. He emphasized a sense of responsibility, urging reflection on the courage and vision of those who shaped the country. “It’s a moment to ensure the American Dream thrives for future generations,” he added.

Since its unveiling on June 25, the 9-foot-by-17-foot painting has drawn crowds eager to experience its grandeur firsthand. Robaid’s ambitious work is part of the larger America 250 celebration, attracting countless visitors and garnering attention through various media channels.

Robaid considers this creation, forever, to be the peak of his artistic journey spanning over three decades. Although he’s completed large patriotic murals, he asserted that this painting is his most technically demanding project to date.

“Every day feels like the Fourth of July for me,” he shared, explaining the motivation behind his ongoing tribute to the flag. “Generations of Americans have fought to preserve it for us,” he reiterated.

Known for his patriotic themes and conservative activism, Robaid aims for his work to transcend political divides. “The flag is for all Americans,” he stated, observing how people from diverse backgrounds connect not over politics but the shared meaning of the flag and what this anniversary signifies.

He believes one of the core messages conveyed through this work is that the Star-Spangled Banner represents constitutional freedoms enjoyed by all, even those with differing viewpoints.

Reflecting on his activism, Robaid said, “When I protest, I fly the American flag, as it’s this flag that gives me the freedom to do so.” For him, painting the flag is a means of expressing gratitude towards those who sacrifice for liberty.

Interacting with visitors has also been an essential part of Robaid’s journey. He expressed joy in seeing families and children engaged with the artwork, and veterans reflecting on its significance. “This isn’t about me—it’s about the legacy of our country,” he remarked.

As the painting nears completion, there are increasing inquiries regarding its future location. Robaid hopes for a permanent place that honors its significance and serves as a reminder for generations to come.

Earlier this year, Robaid also proposed installing a towering American flag at Ground Zero to commemorate the 250th anniversary, gaining support from various quarters, including billionaire Marcus Lemonis and families of September 11 victims.

Ultimately, for Robaid, this work is just another chapter in his long-standing mission to celebrate the Star-Spangled Banner and the principles he believes define America. “I see the Star-Spangled Banner as the greatest work of art,” he concluded, emphasizing that each painting session is an act of gratitude. “If this painting reminds even one young person of what the flag represents, every effort will be worth it.”
