Increased Scrutiny on Activist Groups Amid Protests in Los Angeles
Recent protests and riots against ICE in Los Angeles have now drawn heightened scrutiny on various activist organizations, notably the humanitarian immigration rights group Chirla, the Socialism and Liberation Party, and the Union del Barrio.
Senator Josh Hawley has taken an interest in these groups, which are under investigation, particularly concerning funding that might support violent activities. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem noted that both the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism and her department are looking into these financial matters.
Hawley reached out to the organizations, questioning their funding and support related to the recent unrest in Los Angeles, emphasizing the seriousness of such allegations. “Bankrolling civil unrest is not protected speech,” he stated, suggesting that they may have provided logistical and financial backing for disruptive acts.
At a press conference with Mayor Karen Bass, Chirla’s Executive Director, Angelica Salas, responded to the investigation, asserting that their group is dedicated to non-violent activism. Despite receiving the letter from Hawley, she expressed confidence that it wouldn’t hinder their efforts.
Interestingly, the organization denies any involvement in violence. Parts of Los Angeles are currently facing property damage as protests have escalated, sparked by ICE enforcement actions.
Chirla has received significant taxpayer funding, totaling around $34 million over the years, which includes about $750,000 during the Biden administration, according to records.
Salas mentioned their “rapid response network” — a system meant to assist during enforcement actions. This network was actively fielding calls until late in the evening during their most recent operations, indicating the community’s anxiety surrounding the ICE sweeps.
According to their mission statement, Chirla aims to empower communities through advocacy for human, civil, and labor rights. The group’s website reflects a commitment to shaping public policy by uniting individuals and organizations.
Naturally, amid these serious allegations, the FBI also stated that they are prepared to investigate any signs of conspiracy if they emerge from the ongoing protests, particularly related to the violence surrounding the enforcement actions.
In summary, while the protests are a clear display of community dissent, they have also raised questions about funding and the role of various organizations in the unrest — a situation that may develop further as investigations progress.
