Local Democratic Official Charged with DUI After Overindulging in Alcohol During St. Patrick's Day Act

Political foolishness or just plain foolishness?

Samantha Steele, a Democrat on the Cook County Board of Review in Illinois, was arrested in November 2024 for allegedly driving under the influence and colliding with another vehicle.

Reports indicate that Chicago police found Steele lying on the sidewalk near the crash scene. She reportedly declined to undergo a field sobriety test and refused to answer questions. During her arrest, she repeatedly asked the officer, “Is your penis that small?”

A first-term official from Cook County was booked for DUI on the North Side according to police records.

In today’s environment, I wonder if this incident is serious enough to warrant either a resignation or an embarrassment-induced stepping down.

Actually, Steele is up for re-election soon. Just a few days ago, she was spotted at the St. Patrick’s Day parade, swaying while dressed in green, pulling a wagon with campaign signs, distributing “Steel Brand beer koozies,” and apparently enjoying some alcohol.

A photo shared online captured Steele handing out the beer koozies while partaking at the parade.

The individual who posted the photo on social media, Frank Calabrese, previously worked for Steele and has reportedly filed a lawsuit alleging retaliation after cooperating with an investigation involving her.

Honestly, it would surprise me if Steele managed to secure re-election. While I’m not well-versed in the nuances of Chicago’s local politics, it seems like any footage from the incident should have the potential to hinder someone’s career, whether they aim for Congress or any government position.

Nonetheless, it seems these days fewer politicians feel compelled to resign for scandals, whether they’re significant or trivial. This trend points to a troubling state of American politics, even in local arenas, characterized by a kind of nihilism alongside indulgence.
