Bowser Acknowledges Federal Troops Help in Reducing Crime

Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, DC, recently acknowledged that the presence of military personnel has played a role in decreasing crime rates in the capital, which sparked frustration among some local Democratic lawmakers.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Bowser noted a significant drop in carjacking incidents in the city. While crime had been declining prior to the federal troop increase, she stated that these additional officers positively influenced the results.

“When carjacking decreases, along with other violent crimes, the community feels safer,” she remarked.

Bowser expressed gratitude for the federal efforts that bolstered the local police’s work, clarifying, “Our focus today is to highlight the most concerning crime areas for 2023.” She highlighted that there has been an 87% decline in carjackings compared to last year.

Despite her positive comments, some city Democrats were visibly upset, suggesting that Bowser’s characterization did not align with the sentiments of many residents. “We shouldn’t give the impression that this is acceptable or beneficial for our city,” said one frustrated council member, Brian Nadeau. “People are reluctant to go out and do their jobs, and they’re frustrated with the erosion of our home rule.”

Moreover, critics of the President, including California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, have accused the administration of militarizing urban areas to intimidate political adversaries. Bowser remarked that while they hadn’t requested these federal troops, the goal was to utilize them strategically to support the ongoing efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department.
