Local police are disputing claims that the Secret Service instructed them to guard the roof where an assassin opened fire on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July.
Acting Director of the Secret Service Ronald Rowe said in recent testimony that local police snipers were positioned in adjacent buildings on the rooftops and would have seen Thomas Matthew Crooks climbing to his position if they had stayed in their posts. Others have posted videos suggesting this, Breitbart News reported.

According to the map Provided According to the office of Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Ohio), local police snipers from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit, who assisted the Secret Service that day, were not assigned to guard the rooftops, and the maps show lines marking their areas, which do not include rooftops.
In his letter to Lowe, Senator Grassley asked for more information about whether the Secret Service actually ordered local police to provide security on the roof, and for more details about the on-site briefing that Lowe claimed occurred that local police said did not take place that day.
In his letter, Grassley asked Lowe:
- Provide a scene map clearly showing where all local and federal law enforcement counter-snipers were positioned, their assigned coverage areas, and the shooter’s location that day.
- Do the above photos and diagrams contradict Secret Service records regarding how local snipers were supposed to be positioned and how the AGR building was supposed to be covered? Please explain and provide all records.
- Please detail how the Beaver County and Butler County countersniper teams were assigned to their respective locations and coverage areas on the second floor of the AGR complex. Did the Secret Service assign or approve countersniper positions within the AGR complex? If so, when, to whom, and how was the instruction given?
- Are there any Secret Service records that would indicate that local counter snipers were supposed to be stationed inside the AGR building rather than outside? Please provide all records.
- Regarding your testimony, who told the Secret Service that the building was “going to be covered”? Who was present at the “in-person” meeting you mentioned?
Senator Grassley also asked whether he had seen any Secret Service personnel on the roof before Crooks opened fire. Rowe claims that the Secret Service sniper never saw Crooks before opening fire, but this claim is called into question by a video recorded by one of the wounded victims behind Trump that clearly shows someone running across the roof.

“Did any federal law enforcement personnel working the July 13th incident see anyone on the roof of the AGR building prior to the shooter opening fire? If so, which agencies? Please provide details and timestamps,” Grassley asked Rowe.
Senator Grassley set a deadline for Lowe of August 16th.
Nearly 30 days after the July 13 assassination attempt, there are still few answers as to why the Secret Service failed to secure the building where the gunman shot and nearly killed President Trump while he was on live television.
