Lambeth Council’s New Immigration Policy
Lambeth Council, led by the Green Party, is making a significant change in how they handle immigration enforcement. Following a strategy similar to the sanctuary city approach seen in the U.S., they’ve decided to stop assisting the British government with detaining illegal immigrants.
This decision means that the Home Office won’t receive information about foreign nationals living in and around London anymore—something that could potentially lead to security issues.
The move, spearheaded by former Green Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley, stems from concerns that immigration raids in London instill fear and create divisions within communities. Bartley shared these thoughts, emphasizing, “Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths and we want all residents to feel safe and valued and able to participate in public services without fear.”
As Refugee Week approaches, Bartley believes it’s crucial to reflect carefully on how immigration information gets shared. “We need a clear picture of what’s happening,” he added, noting the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding information sharing and whether it aligns with the borough’s values.
He also highlighted the importance of making all immigrants feel “welcome” in Lambeth, aligning with the council’s dedication to diversity and inclusion. Many migrants might hesitate to reach out to local services due to fears of immigration enforcement, which is a troubling thought.
This new stance may be influenced by similar movements in U.S. cities where Democratic politicians have established policies refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. However, not everyone agrees with this approach. Conservative MP Chris Philip criticized the decision as “extreme” and “dangerous,” arguing that it could encourage human traffickers to send more migrants to London.
According to Philip, immigration officers play a crucial role in tracking illegal immigrants, and preventing them from doing their job might signal to traffickers that the UK is lenient on immigration issues. He expressed concerns that the Green Party’s ideology seems to prioritize open borders regardless of the implications.
The Green Party’s stance on immigration has certainly sharpened over time, with members advocating for amnesty for illegal immigrants and taxpayer-funded housing. A policy adopted in 2023 suggested a vision for a “world without borders,” asserting that illegal immigration should never be regarded as a crime.
