Arkansas Democrat Hallie Shoffner Proposes to Cut ICE Funding, Urges Government to Avoid Negative Actions on Immigration

Arkansas Democratic Senate Candidate Voices Opposition to ICE

Harry Shoffner, a Democratic Senate candidate from Arkansas, is challenging the incumbent Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.). In a recent statement, Shoffner expressed his intention to vote for defunding ICE in its current form. He criticized the government’s approach to immigration, arguing that it portrays immigrants—and particularly undocumented ones—as adversaries.

During a June event hosted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Shoffner spoke about what he aims to do for immigrant communities. He stated, “We need to recognize that the immigrant community, whether documented or not, is essential to our society. They contribute significantly to our culture and economy.” He emphasized the need to move beyond punitive measures, pointing out that the current government stance treats entire communities like enemies, which he believes must end.

Shoffner responded to inquiries about the government’s objectives regarding immigration by outlining what he sees as necessary steps: enforcing reasonable laws, avoiding nonsensical regulations, treating individuals with dignity, and fostering a more humane approach. “Right now, our government is failing at this,” he insisted.

Shoffner also noted the importance of addressing the broader implications of immigration on both documented and undocumented individuals, emphasizing their contributions to local economies. “Why not design an immigration system that prioritizes human dignity and seeks input from both immigrants and small businesses on how to thrive?” he questioned.

When asked directly if he would support defunding ICE, he replied affirmatively, stating, “I would vote to defund ICE in its current state. It no longer serves its original purpose and has become the largest law enforcement entity in the country.” He highlighted the budget disparity in law enforcement, pointing out that ICE has a budget significantly larger than organizations focused on combating child sex trafficking. Instead, he argued, more attention should be given to pressing issues, such as the alarming number of hungry children in Arkansas.

Arkansas Secretary of State Cole Jester responded to Shoffner’s remarks, praising the work of ICE agents and asserting that opposing their mission undermines representation in the state. Similarly, Samantha Cantrell from the National Republican Senatorial Committee characterized Shoffner’s stance as radical, accusing him of aligning with policies that jeopardize safety in Arkansas.

Shoffner has a history of advocating for undocumented individuals, having worked with the nonprofit Seis Puentes, which assists Hispanic communities in navigating the American system. His political identity encompasses a self-description as a farmer who is not entirely aligned with conventional political parties. Notably, Shoffner’s campaign has involved working with digital influencer firms, a decision met with criticism from political opponents.

As he campaigns against Sen. Cotton, who won his seat by a significant margin in the 2024 elections, Shoffner continues to position himself as a voice for change in the region.
