New Broadcasting Program Launched for Student Journalists
This fall, Sachem North and East will kick off a collaborative broadcasting initiative aimed at establishing themselves as a top contender in student journalism.
Alyssa Tappin, a student at Sachem North and the radio station manager, highlighted the unique experience: “It’s a great work environment. A lot of people don’t get this opportunity.” She seems genuinely excited about what’s in store.
The local broadcasting center, which has been around for some time, is now seeing significant growth, thanks in part to Chris Vaccaro, a student mentor who has strong ties to the program. Students are engaging in various activities, such as preparing sideline reports, generating social media content, and hosting daily shows, all while streaming games and covering interviews with local athletes and leaders.
Tappin, who juggles playing volleyball and lacrosse, is truly passionate about her role. “I’m here almost every day in my grade… I just want to project [my voice]. Not just at school; it’s always out of here,” she shared.
Additionally, Ben Bonett, a senior wide receiver at Sachem North, has been brought on board. He already practices play-by-play commentary. “I love this program,” he said enthusiastically. “I’m a huge sports nerd and I enjoy talking about sports with family and friends.” He’s ready to take on multiple responsibilities.
Bonett’s genuine love for writing and broadcasting shines through as he mentions, “Whatever I have to do, whether it’s working for a team or being the voice of the team, I’m happy.”
In other local sports news, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mack’s Wrexham Football Club will be wrapping up a two-week camp on Friday at the Massapequa Soccer Club. Meanwhile, the Long Island Ducks are set to face the York Revolution from Friday through Sunday in Islip.
