A New York high school volleyball coach accused of raping a 15-year-old girl committed suicide on a train hours after his first court appearance on child sex charges, police said.
Jason Mather, 22, was a volleyball coach at Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic girls’ school in Hempstead, New York. Mather was also the coach of He B&B Volleyball, a club team based on Long Island.
Mercer’s alleged victim played for both teams.
Mather was fired from Sacred Heart Academy and B&B Volleyball following rape allegations.

Sacred Heart officials said they contacted authorities “immediately” after learning of the accusations.
Special Victims Unit officers arrested Maser on Thursday at his home in Syosset. In addition to endangering the welfare of a child, he was charged with two counts of third-degree rape and two counts of sexual battery, according to a criminal complaint.
Police accused Maser of raping a 15-year-old girl at least twice in his Jeep at Albertsons on February 7 and March 7, according to the complaint.
The former part-time coach at Sacred Heart Academy made his first court appearance regarding the allegations Friday afternoon in Hempstead.
Mr. Maser has pleaded not guilty. He was released on $75,000 bail.
Judge Marie F. McCormack ordered Maser to stay away from the alleged victim.
Mather reportedly committed suicide hours after appearing in court.

MTA police said Maser was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maser’s attorney, John Carman, said his family was shocked by the sudden death.
