Los Angeles County Sheriff's under scrutiny for "Stop ICE" sign

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is under fire after the West Hollywood Police Department shared a video that was later taken down. The footage depicted an officer running through a stop sign bearing a “Stop ICE” message.

While officers can hold personal political beliefs, law enforcement should maintain a nonpartisan stance.

The opening scene of the video featured a large “Stop ICE” sign against a sunrise backdrop.

The video captured multiple officers, seemingly disregarding the political message, running down the street before posing next to a vehicle marked “West Hollywood Station.”

LASD confirmed to a local publication that the West Hollywood Police had posted the video, but it was promptly removed.

The publication is still awaiting clarification on whether the department knew about the anti-ICE signs before sharing the video and their reasoning for its removal.

Social media users voiced their frustrations with the sheriff’s office, suggesting that the event wasn’t accidental. One tweet pointedly asked, “Are you guys at West Hollywood Station stupid enough to post a video of a stop sign that says ‘Stop ICE’?”

West Hollywood is recognized for its progressive policies and is known as a center for LGBTQ+ rights, reflecting values on its official website.

Earlier this month, the city took formal steps to create an ICE-free environment, enabling local officials to implement rules against the use of city property by federal immigration agents.

According to Mayor John Heilman, this decision illustrates the city council’s stance that ICE is unwelcome in West Hollywood. He acknowledged the contribution of hardworking immigrants in the community and emphasized the importance of not allowing federal agents to target them.

Lt. Fannie Rapkin from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department clarified that the video was not meant to promote a political agenda but rather showcase training for a local challenge run, intended to demonstrate support for hard work and commitment.

Rapkin noted that at the time of the recording, the officers were unaware of the stop sign sticker’s visibility in the video. Following concerns about potential misinterpretations, the footage was removed and archived as a precaution.
