Molotov Cocktail Incident at Federal Building in Los Angeles
A man was taken into custody in Los Angeles on Monday after allegedly throwing a homemade Molotov cocktail into a federal building downtown. Investigators believe this attack was a self-identified “terrorist attack” focused on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and deportation agents.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly attempted to ignite the incendiary device but it did not catch fire. Authorities also found another Molotov cocktail in his possession.
No one was injured in the incident. The suspect is set to appear in court Tuesday afternoon where he will face official charges.
According to federal investigators, the man’s motivation seemed to stem from frustration with immigration enforcement by the government. After his arrest, he allegedly told federal agents that he aimed to “separate families,” stating, “This is a terrorist attack anyway,” and referred to his actions in a derogatory manner.
The suspect reportedly set fire to a rented apartment earlier that morning before heading to the federal building. Fire officials confirmed that an accelerant was used in the apartment fire.
This federal building, which houses the U.S. Attorney’s Office, ICE, and various other agencies, plays a crucial role in processing many illegal immigrants.
Further, investigators believe the suspect threw one Molotov cocktail at an employee entrance and another at a public door where individuals were queuing to pass through security. Each device was made from delicate containers and included a wick. Tests revealed that one contained substances like hand sanitizer or ethanol, which could act as ignition sources.
This incident follows a series of protests and violent actions against ICE in cities like New York, where numerous arrests were made after demonstrators targeted government properties.
