Los Angeles Sparks receive criticism for Sarah Ashlee Barker’s crop top in social media post

This week, the Los Angeles Sparks faced backlash on social media after a post seemingly sexualizing one of their players. The Sparks shared a graphic of rookie guard Sarah Ashley Barker in what appeared to be a crop top, teasing their upcoming game against the Seattle Storm.

The post mentioned returning to the home crowd and included further details about the game. However, many fans were not happy with the choice. One commenter remarked, “Where is the man in the jersey?” while another said the post felt like a “thirst trap” rather than a proper game announcement. Another critic questioned the message it sent about women’s sports, implying that if the team’s communication included such images, what message were they sending?

Typically, the Sparks share game day posts featuring players in their uniforms, which made the choice to highlight Barker’s outfit particularly controversial.

In a separate incident, Sparks Forward Cameron Brink also faced criticism online, with fans expressing frustration over her presence at events instead of focusing on her injury rehabilitation. A fan commented that if Brink dedicated as much time to recovery as she did to attending events, she might be back on the court by now. Brink defended herself, stating that she works hard every day and that basketball is her passion, suggesting that critics weren’t true fans.

Brink, 23, is currently sidelined after an ACL injury sustained during a match last year. Prior to her injury, she averaged 8.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game. She shared her gratitude with those who understand the challenges of ACL recovery, emphasizing the time it takes to heal and her eagerness to return to play.
