Puppy Rescued from Ocean in California

A puppy had a narrow escape after being carried into the ocean off the California coast last weekend. The black Labrador retriever mix, named Sadie, made her way out of her owner’s home in San Diego during a Sunday football game, as reported by the San Diego Fire Department.

Sadie’s owners, Alexis Barcelos and Brandon Valdez, used an air tag attached to her collar to track her movement and quickly headed to the beach in search of her. Lifeguards situated in Ocean Beach, about two miles from where she was spotted, were alerted to the situation when a dog was found caught in a rip current near the pier.

A lifeguard boat from the U.S. Coast Guard joined the search for the pup. Jack Alldredge, a lifeguard with the San Diego Fire Department, expressed his determination to find Sadie. “I was like, ‘Let me find this dog,'” he told reporters.

Initially, searches didn’t yield any results, prompting lifeguards to consider returning to land. However, in a fortunate turn, Sadie was spotted about half a mile out from South Mission Beach. “I got closer and closer and realized it was her and I was so excited,” Alldredge recalled.

Once located, Sadie was transferred to a surf boat and brought back to shore, where she joyfully reunited with her relieved owners. They shared their gratitude in a video message, recalling the moment they heard the announcement that their dog had been found.

The dog’s rescue sparked an emotional response. “We were just holding our breath,” Barcelos shared. “And when they said, ‘The dog is alive,’ we immediately started crying.” Sadie’s adventure ended on a happy note as she returned home safely, leaving her owners forever grateful for the effort that led to her rescue.
