Brazil’s Lula Demands Financial Disclosure from Bolsonaro for Debate
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated on Tuesday that conservative Senator Flávio Bolsonaro may only participate in the forthcoming presidential runoff debate if he consents to the release of his family’s financial records.
Lula explained his stance by asserting that the president cannot debate with someone he considers a “thief.”
The election is just days away, with the presidential runoff scheduled for Sunday, October 25. Approximately 159 million voters will choose between Flávio Bolsonaro, the leading conservative candidate, and Lula, who is vying for a fourth term.
Last week, the two candidates faced off in their first debate of the 2026 campaign, which many media outlets described as “chaotic.” Lula made several notable gaffes, including a remark suggesting that Brazil would be “finished” if he won again. During this debate, he challenged Bolsonaro to release both their financial and phone records, implying that transparency would help Brazilians understand the true nature of their leaders.
A second and final debate is set to take place in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, October 23, hosted by TV Globo, just two days before the election.
At a campaign event in Pernambuco on Tuesday, Lula reiterated that Bolsonaro can only engage in the debate if he signs a document allowing for the public release of his financial, fiscal, and phone records—not just his, but also those of his family.
“If he [Flávio Bolsonaro] presents a document authorizing the lifting of confidentiality, there will be a debate; otherwise, he cannot participate in the debate. Because a president of the republic cannot debate with a thief,” Lula reportedly told his supporters.
During the rally, the Lula campaign unveiled a jingle titled “Lift the confidentiality, Flávio,” further prompting the senator to meet Lula’s demands.
Additionally, Lula submitted a document on the same day, allowing the release of his family’s records. According to local regulations, the disclosure will be managed through a specialized system and made available on a public website.
This would include his wife, Rosângela “Janja” da Silva, and his five sons. Bolsonaro’s records would cover his wife Fernanda, his siblings, and his parents, including former President Jair Bolsonaro. Lula has stipulated that he will only release his family’s records if Bolsonaro agrees to the same for his family.
The campaign has turned Lula’s challenge into a registered campaign video shared on his official social media. The accompanying text emphasized the need for leaders to be accountable, stating, “Those who owe nothing, fear nothing. And those who fear nothing, open their secrets.”
As of now, neither Senator Bolsonaro nor his campaign members have publicly responded to Lula’s challenge.
Interestingly, Lula’s claim that he cannot debate a “thief” contrasts with past actions during the 2022 campaign against former President Jair Bolsonaro, where Lula’s team successfully demanded the TSE limit the use of such terms against him in campaign materials.
Lula was previously convicted of corruption and money laundering in 2019. However, the Brazilian Supreme Court later overturned the verdict on grounds of procedural issues, allowing him to run for president again in 2022, where he narrowly defeated Jair Bolsonaro.
