Dearborn Mayor Invites Macklemore for Free Concert Following Tour Removal
Abdullah Hammoud, the mayor of Dearborn, Michigan, has extended an invitation to rapper Macklemore to perform a free concert in the city, which has a significant Arab and Muslim population. This comes after Macklemore was recently dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour due to remarks he made expressing support for Palestine.
Following Macklemore’s controversial comments on stage, Hammoud took to social media to welcome the artist, saying, “If they don’t want you performing in their stadiums, you’re always welcome in Dearborn.” He highlighted the city’s supportive community and invited Macklemore to bring his performance there, suggesting that the city would sponsor the event to ensure it was a memorable one.
As of Tuesday evening, Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, has not publicly responded to the invitation from Hammoud.
During his performance before Sheeran, a keffiyeh-wearing Macklemore expressed, “A big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place is so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: ‘Free Palestine.’” He emphasized the importance of his message, wanting it to resonate with those in Gaza and the West Bank.
While performing, he also debuted his song “Hind’s Hall,” which criticizes Israel’s actions following the October 7 Hamas attack, and projected images of the conflict in Gaza onto the screens during his act.
Interestingly, “Hind’s Hall” was temporarily named by student protesters at Columbia University during demonstrations against Israel, following a series of antisemitic incidents on campus that prompted concern and discussions with the Trump administration last summer.
In response to his removal from the tour, Ed Sheeran clarified that the decision to drop Macklemore was made by the promoter and not himself, despite the artist being slated for several more shows. The invitation from Hammoud, however, opens a door for Macklemore to connect with a community that aligns with his stance.
