Macklemore starts Free Palestine Tour shortly after Ed Sheeran's release

Macklemore’s Pro-Palestinian Tour Launches Amid Controversy

Macklemore has taken his political message to a new level. During the kickoff of his Free Palestine Tour, he reaffirmed his pro-Palestinian stance just weeks after his controversial remarks led to his removal from Ed Sheeran’s concert lineup.

“I am proud to stand here on stage in solidarity with the Palestinian people. We will continue to fight for collective liberation until our last breath,” Macklemore expressed to the audience at his Dublin concert, as reported by Reuters.

He reflected on the consequences of his words, saying, “Six weeks ago, two words is all that it took,” referencing his previous declaration of “Free Palestine” while performing for Ed Sheeran.

Macklemore also mentioned, “Those two words are so threatening to some people that we’d rather silence those two words than confront what they actually mean. Somehow those words have become more controversial than the suffering that made them necessary.”

His remarks elicited mixed reactions online, with some praising his bold activism while others criticized his approach, suggesting that he should pay attention to domestic issues instead of making political statements from the stage. One person referred to him as “so performative and bored,” while another questioned his relevance, stating, “Imagine going to this and getting lectured by a person who is literally out of touch.”

Yet, there were also fans who admired his courage, calling him “stunning and brave.” Comments like, “Thank goodness for the humanity and courage of artists like this,” reflected the support he garnered.

Macklemore, whose full name is Ben Haggerty, launched his Free Palestine Tour after being let go as an opening act for Ed Sheeran following backlash over his pro-Palestinian messaging during a concert in early September. Sheeran later clarified that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the concert promoter and venues, not by him personally.

The “Shape of You” singer expressed his dismay regarding the conflict between Israel and Palestine, calling it a “human tragedy” in a lengthy statement shared on Instagram after the incident. He also alleged that Sheeran had mentioned stadium owner Robert Kraft opposed allowing him to perform due to his remarks.

Macklemore’s Free Palestine Tour is set to continue in Paris and London, with U.S. dates expected to be announced later.
