Health-Conscious Shoppers Face New Challenges

For a lot of Americans focusing on health, grocery shopping has become increasingly daunting. The MAHA movement has shed light on various toxins hidden in common foods. Many who prioritize wellness feel an urgent need to examine every product label. It can be pretty overwhelming, especially if you’re unsure of what to avoid.

Ashley and Patrick Sullivan, who produced the documentary “Breaking Big Food,” know this struggle intimately. They’ve dedicated years to revealing the extensive corruption within the food industry, which, quite frankly, has left many Americans addicted and unhealthy.

To assist fellow shoppers, they created a “Dirty Dozen” Cheat Sheet. This resource helps people steer clear of dubious additives and ingredients. During a recent “Relatable” episode with host Allie Beth Stuckey, they offered some practical guidance.

Here’s their list of “Dirty Dozen” foods to be cautious about:

  1. Seed oil
  2. High fructose corn syrup
  3. Artificial sweeteners
  4. Artificial coloring
  5. Artificial fragrance
  6. Natural flavors
  7. Preservatives
  8. Carrageenan
  9. Gums
  10. Non-organic coffee
  11. Non-organic crops
  12. Non-organic meat, eggs, and dairy products

The cheat sheet elaborates on the reasoning for each ingredient’s inclusion.

Ashley mentions, “You don’t have to register anything. You just access it.” She continues, “It’s designed for you to keep on your fridge or save on your phone. That way, it’s handy when you’re out shopping.” Many of the items they list, she notes, “can significantly affect your gut and microbiome.”

When Allie inquires about which overlooked ingredient concerns her the most, Ashley responds, “Natural flavors can be tricky. Even though they sound harmless, they can often refer to MSG, particularly in tasty foods.”

If you’re curious for more insights, take a look at their episode.
