Government Shutdown Blamed on Internal Politics
Rep. Jared Golden (D-Me) has pointed fingers at both left-wing groups and his own party regarding the current government shutdown. In a social media post on Wednesday, he expressed that this shutdown stems from aggressive political maneuvering, particularly from Democratic leaders aiming to demonstrate the divide between far-right and left factions regarding President Trump.
Golden criticized the closure, stating it is “harming Americans and our economy,” and added that it paradoxically empowers the President.
He elaborated, saying, “This fight is ostensibly about healthcare. I would like to extend the ACA tax credit as an alternative to the GOP’s Medicaid cuts. However, some in my party have valid concerns about tax credits benefiting high-income households. There’s room for negotiation. But let’s be clear: normal policy disagreements shouldn’t lead to exposing our constituents to the negative effects of this shutdown.”
In a separate interview on Friday, Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) noted that Democrats would not support the Continuing Resolution (CR) and would avoid negotiations with Republicans.
Meanwhile, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in connection with the ongoing shutdown, suggesting Schumer is more concerned about retaining his leadership position than addressing the shutdown’s impact. Emmer stated, “Behind this closure is a frightened old man named Chuck Schumer, and this has nothing to do with medical care.”
In May, former Maine Governor Paul LePage (R) announced his candidacy for the state’s second legislative district seat, where Golden currently serves. LePage has described his campaign style as that of moderate Republicans while claiming he often votes as a liberal.
He stated, “There are specific things he hasn’t done for Maine, contributing to issues like Canadian encroachments in Maine waters. He’s not supporting our lobster fishermen. I’ve met him; he doesn’t venture north or east. It’s frustrating.”
Breitbart News Director Matthew Boyle added that Golden seems to operate under the directive of Democratic leadership, taking funds from figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), despite portraying himself differently.
In late August, reports indicated that Golden might face a formidable challenge in 2026 from LePage, described as potentially the biggest threat to his Congressional career. Additional polling data suggested growing discontent on the left regarding Golden, revealing that Mat Dunlap could be a significant challenger on the horizon.
