Maine Democrats inform Platner that he will not be involved in the replacement process.

Graham Platner secures victory in Maine Democratic primary amid a series of scandals

Maine Democratic Party Warns Senate Candidate Graham Platner

The Maine Democratic Party has issued a clear statement to Graham Platner, the recent winner of the Senate primary, asserting that he and his campaign will have “no role” in selecting a successor.

Despite the serious allegations against him—specifically a claim of sexual assault from a woman he previously dated—Platner has not stepped away from the race. He remains the Democratic candidate for the Senate, although he has denied these allegations. He acknowledged the political ramifications and is contemplating “the best way forward.”

As the deadline to secure a challenger to incumbent Senator Susan Collins approaches, the state party’s executive director, Devon Murphy Anderson, addressed the situation in a video. She emphasized that maintaining the integrity of the process is crucial, noting, “Unfortunately, Graham Platner’s team has reached out to us repeatedly to understand what this process will look like.” She added that they have consistently informed Platner’s team that they won’t be involved in determining the next Democratic nominee.

Amid all this, a representative from Platner’s campaign remarked that they are trying to grasp the process but insisted they never intended to skew it in their favor. They highlighted that numerous Maine residents supported Platner and that these voters should influence the decision moving forward.

In contrast, the Maine Democratic Party conveyed that multiple women have raised significant and credible allegations against Platner. They expressed unity with survivors and reiterated that until Platner resigns, they cannot initiate the replacement process. The party’s statement underscored the need for responsibility in selecting their representative, noting that time is of the essence, with candidate withdrawal set for July 13 and nominations for new candidates closing on July 27.

If Platner does not withdraw by the specified date, Democrats risk losing the opportunity to nominate a replacement, which could be pivotal in defeating the long-time Republican incumbent.

Potential candidates to replace him include former Senate President Troy Jackson and current Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, among others. This situation presents a significant opportunity for Democrats aiming to regain Senate control in a critical race.
