Polls Show Tight Contest for Maine Senate Seat
Recent polling suggests a close race for the Maine Senate seat between incumbent Susan Collins and challenger Troy Jackson. In an August survey, 32% of registered voters identified inflation and high prices as their primary concern, with border security following closely behind. Contributors have pointed out Jackson’s progressive platform, which includes proposals like Medicare for All and the abolishment of ICE.
In other news, Jackson acknowledged a physical altercation from around 40 years ago, drawing responses from Senate Republicans after a police report about the incident resurfaced. “I was 19 at the time and I took responsibility for my actions then, as I do now,” Jackson stated. He emphasized that this event does not reflect who he is today, particularly regarding his relationship with partner Lana Pelletier.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is calling for Democratic leaders to censure Jackson regarding the incident as he vies for the seat previously held by Collins. The NRSC has involved several prominent Democratic figures in their statements about the 1988 incident, which included a physical confrontation where Jackson allegedly kicked in a door and assaulted a man at his home.
According to a police report, Jackson approached the residence late one night, and, after being asked to leave, he reportedly broke down the door. Witnesses described Jackson as being aggressive, stating that he even threatened the man involved. Afterward, Jackson was said to have discussed potential legal action with Pelletier, although she later disputed this account, claiming she didn’t recall making such statements.
Reports indicate that Jackson settled the matter by paying the victim $50. Interestingly, there seems to be no recent criminal history for him, as the only recorded incident dates back to 1988. As Jackson prepares to face Collins in the election, the resurfacing of this old incident may add complexity to his campaign, especially following the previous candidate’s withdrawal.
