Maine Senate hopeful Ashley Webb gains attention over songwriter statement

During a Senate debate in Maine on Thursday night to fill the vacancy left by former Democratic candidate Graham Platner, social media lit up when one contender mentioned her songwriting experience as a qualification for the Senate. When asked about needed qualifications, Senate candidate Ashley Webb stated, “I’ve run a few times without success, but I became a songwriter and then began writing my own books.”

Webb, who identifies as transgender, explained, “I think my transparency is key. I don’t mislead people. Right now, we’re being deceived. We see the smoke and mirrors, especially with what’s happening with ICE.”

The moment sparked a flurry of reactions online, particularly among conservatives who mocked Webb’s qualifications.

“Honestly, you can’t be serious…” Conservative commentator Dave Rubin remarked online.

Jesse Arm, from the Manhattan Institute, expressed his belief that Susan Collins would win the election, while author Bethany Mandel added, “You can’t convince me this is real.”

Despite the criticisms, David Harsanyi from the Washington Examiner quipped, “To be fair, that’s a more relevant experience than Platner.” Republican strategist Matt Whitlock noted their watchful consideration of the debate over Platner’s replacement, while Citizens Alliance CEO Cliff Maloney asked, “What the hell is going on in Maine?!”

Florida Political Reporter Eric Daugherty described the Maine Democratic primary as “totally a clown car.”

Webb was one of eight candidates present during the two-hour debate, sharing the stage with individuals such as Maine Secretary of State Shena Bellows and former officials in various capacities.

As for the upcoming Democratic convention, the selected candidate will face off against longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins in a crucial midterm election that could shape the Senate’s future. Over a dozen Democrats have filed to compete for the chance to replace Platner.
