Child victim’s family disputes Talarico in Paxton Senate race

James Talarico misinterprets the Second Amendment in discussions about gun control

Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is currently facing criticism for statements he made regarding his campaign’s engagement with the families of child sex abuse victims. During a press conference on July 9, Talarico accused his Senate opponent, Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, of orchestrating an “Epstein-style mistress deal” with former lawyer Adam Hoffman.

When asked by reporters if he had spoken directly with the victim’s family, Talarico mentioned, “Our team has been in touch.” However, Melissa Dieterich, a spokesperson for the family, contradicted his assertion by sharing a note on Facebook stating: “We have not made any statement to Mr. Talarico. We have not spoken to him.”

Dieterich expressed frustration, stating that the family is “tired of being used in this election,” and that they are weary of the misinformation spread by both Talarico and Paxton. She emphasized the importance of changing the court system, noting the horrible experiences victims endure.

Following Dieterich’s remarks, Talarico’s campaign spokesperson J.T. Ennis addressed the situation, acknowledging the family’s suffering and underscoring the need for respect. He defended Talarico’s actions, mentioning that the campaign provided support to the family. Ennis noted that Talarico condemns the plea deal negotiated by Paxton’s office, demanding that justice is served to prevent future occurrences.

Hoffman faced charges for continuous sexual abuse of a child. In early 2026, a plea deal was made where he pleaded guilty to indecent assault and was sentenced to 60 days in jail, only serving 29 days after a mistrial resulted from a jury’s deadlock in 2025. Some including an assistant attorney general described the plea decision as a difficult but necessary choice aimed at the best interest of the children involved.

The victim’s mother initially agreed to the plea deal but later rescinded her support, alleging that the judicial system had manipulated the situation. She accused the officials involved of “perverting the system,” stating, “That’s not justice. It’s manipulation.”

At a press conference, Talarico compared the plea deal to that of Jeffrey Epstein, and criticized Paxton for denying a Freedom of Information request related to the case. He stated, “Our government does not need any more guardians of pedophiles,” and emphasized that Hoffman should be facing more severe consequences.

A spokesperson from Paxton’s campaign retorted that their office had released information about the case and affirmed their commitment to supporting the child victim. They accused Talarico of using victims as political tools for his gain, alleging that he re-traumatizes them every time he discusses the incident.

As the political landscape continues to unfold, it’s clear that the implications of these accusations continue to reverberate within the Texas Senate race.
